Biography

I was born in May of 1974, in Newton New Jersey, in the same hospital as my father and grandfather. My early memories are fragmented much like my writings and imagery. I do recall always wanting to be an artist and being a keen observer. Much of my youth was spent at the kitchen table drawing, scribbling, trying to make thought concrete.
All my life I have sought to make images that evoke feeling and inspire thought. What ever meaning or value is derived by the viewer from my work is not my primary concern. All I desire is to awaken eyes to possibility... to be a catalyst in the lethargic mind... to trigger the synapses... to ignite thought...Gun is Mind.

Statements

My imagery questions identity in regards to society, family, and spirituality and is enacted through the analysis of my own experiences, dreams and observations… gesturing towards facades and searching for truth within corroded viewpoints and memories. Much of my recent work uses the photograph as a source or trigger to conjure memory, from that memory the images evolve. The majority of my work questions a past perception in relation to those ideals and beliefs I hold now.

Inspirations

I remember being drawn to a picture of my grandfather in uniform, trimmed by a silver frame it has moved from my grandmothers house to that of my mother, but it always draws me in. He was an ideal hero for me as a little boy; striking, intense, piercing blue eyes, honorable, the willing sacrifice. My sister and I spent a few summers in his house all of us under my grandmothers thumb. He and I shared a room and often enjoyed listening to his phonograph. Not to music mind you but to stories of great men and conquest. I imagined my grandfather as the hero in every novel. First he was a musketeer, then one of King Arthur’s knights, but most often he was a hero in the stories of his age. As we sat there in his room he in his chair and I on my cot, the words spilling out of the brass horn of that old phonograph, I would study his mannerisms his hands his face… as he looked sightless into some distant time… I was invisible unheard the perfect observer. How I wanted to be him in his youth fighting the good fight, standing up for the truth. Yes I spent a few seasons in the blind mans cave, but now I see.
The facade is brilliant and awe inspiring in the case of a hero… but some hero’s have double lives as do most of us. What lies beneath?
