If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint" - Edward Hopper

The series of paintings derived from oriental tattoos, is called Ornamentation. They are 35 watercolors 3x5 feet in size. There were never any preliminary drawings or drawing whatsoever, no pencil touched the paper. My intention was respect for the tattoo artist, they have no second chances. Each painting would start with a central image and then develop as I saw color, movement and composition. The last painting was completed in 2007. Ornamentation began with my little children doing washes with me on the painting. Later they became very sexual images. I feel I’ve said all I needed to with the subject matter. So now it’s time to move on. My approach to painting is always the same. I never worry about making a pretty picture and the subject matter is just something that holds my interest so I can paint. If some one likes it that’s great, but it’s not why I paint. The new series of paintings will have to deal with growing up in America. Being a product of advertising, and the images that have been burned into our brains from early childhood. Hopefully a new journey begins. The paintings will all be 5 foot watercolors on paper, and the first one is completed.
