Old man sitting in rocker, whittleing begins to speak with old Raspy country man voice)
"Time ain't been kind to this old body. I think time marched right over me and took a lot of my health with it...But I still got a lot to be thankful for..A lot to be thankful for.
I got my memories and I got my dog Rascal and a hot meal or two to eat everyday. So I gots a lot I reckon.
My eyes ain't sharp as they use to be...and my ears..well sometimes they don't always wanna hear alls that's being said. But it's like my Pappy use to say, He'd say "Son, sometimes you gots to listen with more than those 2 ears on the side of your head. Sometimes you gots to listen with your eyes and you hast to listen with your heart."
I didn't always understand what Pappy was talking about but I reckon I understood that alright. Sometimes our ears play tricks on us. I remember I got Sally a clock she'd been hankeren for. The kind that daggom chimed every fifteen minutes. Shoot we didn't get a minutes sleep the first week we had it. But one night we slept all the way through and we just didn't hear it anymore. It rang regular and all, but we got use to hearin it I reckon...course folks would come by and spend the night and they were mightly ragged cause it was all they heard. Funny how your ears work.
(Rocking)
I remember when my Sally told me when she was sick. I know that I heard with my ears, but it was what I heard with my heart that made it real. Sally won't here much longer after that. But I reckon that's a gift da Lord gives us..the ability to hear lots of ways.
Pappy use to say that all the world hollars the wonders of God. He'd say that he wondered if all the shepherds that Christmas night heard the angels sing...Cause he says he's seen a lot of folks stand right beside him in church and hear the same things with their ears he heard....but they didn't hear it in their heart or hear it with their eyes when looking at the sky at night or looking at a new momma with her baby..they didn't see God in none of that. "Heck' he said, 'lots of floks have ears but they're broke.' He said "its better to have a listening heart that works than a whole head full of ears."
Well I figure what pappy figured...that hearing the good news is not just something you hear with your ears..you have to hear it with your heart and the ya gots to make sure other people hear it with their heart ears...Yeah, kinda like that old clock..only thing is..ya gots to make sure you don't forget to listen for it...Cause it sure was pretty sounding...
