An unknown actor to portray blind person-dark sunglasses, needs to have assistance to podium and know script.
Good Morning! I was asked to come and speak to you today about sight. You might think that at first it would be mean to ask a blind person to talk about sight, especially someone like myself who has been blind since birth. But I know a little about sight that I would like to share with you, so I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this Advent celebration.
As I already shared, I was born blind. But I had a mother that didn't see my blindness as an inability to see. She always told me I would just have to learn to see different than most folks. That is the way my life began, learning how to see.
I remember leaving for home from the blind school, where I learned to live without sight and coming home to learn how to see. My mother would talk to me about what she saw and describe it to me in words..but she soon realized that I had nothing to reference her words to. She would talk to me about the beautiful clouds in a bright blue sky and I could not imagine what that looked like as I had never seen it before. So she thought and thought and there, school really began.
I remember one day, my mother had me sit at the picnic table in the backyard and she talked of clouds; while talking about clouds, she placed cotton balls in my hands and said, "Feel that? That is what clouds look like" While decribing the blue sky she ran water over my hands and said that is whay blue looks like. She then spoke of the beautiful green meadow that surrounded our property and with that, she placed torn grass and leaves of mint in my hands for me to smell green. Brown was represented by freshly turned soil with its rich earth smell and I could see brown. Vibrant red was seen through feeling the heat from a rock warmed in the summer sun. Colors flashed in my eyes through the smells, the sounds, and the touch of the world around me. Soon my darkness didn't seem quite so dark. But I longed to understand light.
Light to me represented all that sight offered. My mother said it was the opposite of darkness that I constantly saw, but to me once again I could not see it. So my mother pondered only for a moment. She left and when she returned she stood me facing the full noon sun and in my hands she placed cubes of ice. "That my son, is light. It feels like the warmth of the sun, but it's like ice, clear, crisp and pure.
I found the light of Christ the same way. But instead of my mother gently guiding me, it was God gently calling to my heart. He called to me in the kindnesses shown to me by His children. He spoke to me in the sounds of the morning. He called to my heart through His powerful word. He sent his messengers to tell me of His wonderful love for me and His sacrifice of His Son for my sins.
Gently he called to me, and He calls to you.
I know the fear of darkness. God knows the fear in your spiritual darkness. But I stand here today as an eye-witness, saying the only way to be free of the darkness that encompasses you is to open your eyes and see the Light of the World.
On this day, I invite you to step out of the darkness. Christ in no longer the baby who was born so many years ago. He is the risen Lord who longs to free you from the bondages of the dark. He longs to show you all His plans for you.
As the hymnist wrote, " I was blind but now I see" You too can see if you only ask.
Thank you and God Bless.
